Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you might be wondering before joining the expedition.
Welcome to Chestnut Gables. We're so glad you found your way here.
Whether you're wondering what arrives each month, who the Literary Field Guide is for, or simply trying to decide if this journey is right for you, we hope these answers help.
What is Chestnut Gables?
Chestnut Gables is a home for story collectors.
It's a sanctuary for cultivating curiosity, wonder, creativity, imagination, and a deeper connection with the world around us.
We believe stories don't begin when we sit down to write—they begin when we notice something worth wondering about.
The Literary Field Guide is the first offering from Chestnut Gables and our monthly invitation into that way of seeing.
What is the Literary Field Guide?
The Literary Field Guide is a monthly storytelling expedition delivered by mail.
Each month explores a different storytelling theme through a carefully curated collection of beautiful paper goods, original artwork, mystery specimens, thoughtful prompts, and creative invitations designed to help you notice more deeply and imagine more freely.
Rather than teaching rules for writing, each expedition helps cultivate the habits of a storyteller: curiosity, observation, perspective, language, and wonder.
Do I need to be a writer?
Not at all.
The Literary Field Guide was created for anyone who loves stories.
Many of our members enjoy writing, while others simply love reading, collecting beautiful things, observing the world, or exercising their imagination.
If you've ever found yourself wondering about the history of an old object, inventing stories for strangers in a café, or collecting little treasures from your walks, you'll probably feel right at home here.
What arrives each month?
Each monthly expedition includes a thoughtfully curated collection of storytelling artifacts.
While every expedition is different, you'll typically receive:
• A Narrative Painting
• A Story Starter
• Three Character Cards
• Three Field Word Cards
• A Mystery Story Specimen
• A Story Specimen Card for your own discoveries
• An Expedition Guide
• A personal letter from Ashley
Every expedition revolves around a new theme and is designed to spark curiosity in a different way.
What is a Story Specimen?
A Story Specimen is an ordinary object with extraordinary possibilities.
Each month you'll receive a small specimen that invites you to notice details, ask questions, and imagine the stories it might hold.
The goal isn't to discover one correct answer.
It's to discover how differently people can experience the same object.
Is this like a subscription box?
Not really.
We think of it more as a monthly expedition.
Every mailing is intentionally designed around a single storytelling theme and meant to be explored slowly over the course of the month.
It's less about collecting products and more about cultivating a way of seeing.
What age is the Literary Field Guide for?
The Literary Field Guide is designed primarily for teens and adults.
Many families enjoy exploring the expeditions together, and we've found that readers, writers, artists, homeschoolers, educators, and lifelong learners all discover something meaningful within its pages.
When will my expedition arrive?
New expeditions are mailed once each month.
Once your subscription begins, you'll receive your monthly expedition along with updates about upcoming mailings.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes.
You may cancel your subscription at any time through your customer account.
There are no cancellation fees or long-term commitments.
Will every expedition be different?
Yes.
Every month explores a completely new theme, new artwork, new words, new specimens, new characters, and new questions to notice.
Each expedition becomes part of an ever-growing collection of stories.
I'm not very creative. Is this still for me?
Absolutely.
Creativity isn't something you either have or don't have.
It's something that grows through attention.
The Literary Field Guide isn't about becoming a professional writer or artist—it's about rediscovering curiosity, paying closer attention, and allowing yourself to wonder again.
